What are Scope 3 Emissions?

Scope 3 emissions arise from sources in an organization’s value/supply chain that are not owned or controlled by the reporting company (e.g. materials suppliers, third-party logistics providers, waste management suppliers, travel suppliers, lessees and lessors, franchisees, retailers, employees, and customers).  An understanding of its Scope 3 GHG emissions can serve an organization as a means of readily improving its CDP score, identifying commercial and reputational risk and opportunity latent within a supply chain; developing a more comprehensive view of the implications of its activities on climate change; and communicating stewardship, building brand value and gaining competitive advantage in the market place.

What Does Calculating and Reporting Scope 3 GHG Emissions Entail?

Quantifying Scope 3 emissions by conventional means is one of the most time-consuming yet uncertain parts of a carbon footprint.  In order to estimate Scope 3 emissions, a list of inputs to an organization that includes products, services, equipment and logistics needs to be compiled. Even once inputs have been identified, the significant task remains to gather appropriate conversion factors and assign a boundary to the task of analysis at hand.

How many points are available?

In the 2015 CDP questionnaire, Scope 3 emissions data is included within section 14 of the emissions module. A maximum of 19 disclosure points and 6 performance points are available.

Why are these points important?

As companies disclose an increasing amount of information through the CDP, available points become increasingly important in order to establish, maintain or improve a company’s ranking. Scope 3 has to date been by far the most neglected area of disclosure because of the challenges of data collection, noted above. Therefore, for many organisations, the Scope 3 emissions module represents as yet untapped points.

1) CALCULATION - Measure and Report your organization’s scope 3 emissions

There are two options by which this can be facilitated:

1. User-data entry
The disclosing company inputs the required spend and other data into defined fields in the VitalMetrics CDP intuitive online interface. Emissions are calculated, and CDP disclosure-ready results are delivered.

2. Data mapping service
VitalMetrics receives an export of raw client spend data and maps it, via proprietary software, to the CEDA datasets, and then organizes said data by CDP reporting criteria; emissions are calculated, and CDP disclosure-ready results are delivered.

3) COMPARISON: Calculate your organization’s previous year's  scope 3 emissions and compare them with those of the reporting year
(see CDP 2016 Information Request Q.14.3)

VitalMetrics CDP enables a disclosing company to readily compare its scope 3 emissions for the reporting year with those for the previous year, regardless of whether this is the company’s first year of disclosure. By replicating the procedure in 14.1, the previous year’s data is collated, analyzed, and CDP disclosure-ready results are delivered, with all 14.3 disclosure requirements addressed.
